Feeling Lost? Find Purpose Through Kindness and Truth

Feeling Lost? How to Find Your Purpose Through the Wisdom of Dharma

Many people come to me with a quiet ache beneath their questions:

“What do I do if I don’t know my purpose?”

“What happens when I feel lost or directionless?”

In today’s world, the idea of having a purpose has become so loaded. It can empower us—but it can also become an ego trap. Some people cling to rigid identities or adopt causes just to feel significant. But when purpose becomes a badge we wear to prove our worth, it can create separation rather than connection.

Here’s something I’ve learned:

You don’t have to see your whole purpose to take the next right step.

Often, our deeper purpose reveals itself when we simply do the next right thing. That’s why the Yamas and Niyamas—the ethical foundations of yoga—are so powerful. They help us discern our next right action, even when we don’t know the big picture. And this is not separate from the classical definition of yoga in the Bhagavad Gita: “Yoga is skill in action.” That means doing the right thing at the right time—even if it’s uncomfortable, even if others won’t understand.

What Is Dharma in Yoga?

In yoga philosophy, dharma refers to living in harmony with truth and your higher nature. The foundational ethical teachings in yoga, known as the Yamas, are considered universal laws that transcend time, place, and belief systems. Just like the Ten Commandments in Abrahamic religions, the Yamas are a guide for living with integrity.

They are:

  • Ahimsa – Non-violence

  • Satya – Truthfulness

  • Asteya – Non-stealing

  • Brahmacharya – Wise use of energy

  • Aparigraha – Non-possessiveness

These aren’t easy practices. Sometimes we act aggressively because we’re afraid. Sometimes we lie because the truth feels too vulnerable. But when you choose truth over fear, and truth over self-interest, something powerful begins to shift.

Living With Purpose Starts With Being Honest and Kind

Purpose doesn’t always show up as a grand calling. Sometimes, it looks like telling the truth when it’s hard. Being kind even when no one is watching. Creating safe, honest spaces where others feel seen.

When you consistently live with compassion (ahimsa) and integrity (satya), you build trust. You become someone people can count on. And in those safe, truthful surroundings, something extraordinary happens:

People grow. And so do you.

Dharma is not a destination—it’s how you walk the path. If you plant truth, you’ll grow clarity and intuition . If you act with love doing the right thing, you’ll cultivate the joy of giving. If you Find the joy of giving, there you have your purpose.

With Purpose

If you’re feeling lost, try this simple shift:

Stop asking “What is my purpose?”

Start asking, “What is the right thing to do right now?”

It may be to apologize. To rest. To listen.

It may be to speak up. To tell the truth.

It may be to be kind even when it’s hard.

Purpose isn’t found in the mind. It’s lived in action. And yoga gives us the tools to act with clarity, presence, and care.
